The changing influences of the AMO and PDO on the decadal variation of the Santa Ana winds
نویسنده
چکیده
Santa Anawind (SAW) events have great implications for the environment of SouthernCalifornia, but the cause of their decadal variability has not been fully understood. We showwith observational analysis that theAtlanticmulti-decadal oscillation (AMO)has a stronger influence than the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) inmodulating SAWactivity through twomechanisms: theGreat Basin pressure gradientmechanism, inwhich a strengthenedGreat Basin high promotes SAWactivity and vice versa through the northeast–southwest pressure gradient across SouthernCalifornia, and the Pacific jetstreamdisplacementmechanism, inwhich a strengthened Pacific subtropical high (PSH) prohibitsmid-latitude cyclones from traveling towardCalifornia, consequently encouraging SAW development and vice versa. While the AMO strengthens or weakens both theGreat Basin and PSHs to stronglymodulate SAWactivity through these twomechanisms, the PDO strengthens one of the highs but weakens the other, causing the twomechanisms to cancel each other, producing little influence on SAWactivity. A projection based on the AMOandPDO indicates that the above-average SAWactivity observed since the beginning of the 21st century is likely to terminate after 2016, after which SouthernCaliforniamay experience an extended period of below-average SAWactivity through 2030.

[1] A study of the influences of interdecadal and interannual oceanic-atmospheric influences on April 1 Snow-Water Equivalent (SWE) in the western U.S. is presented. SWE data was identified at 323 Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) SNOTEL (SNOwpack TELemetrysites) stations for the period of 1961 to 2004 and for 121 SNOTEL stations for the period 1941 to 2004. The phases (cold/negativ...
متن کاملContingent Pacific-Atlantic Ocean influence on multicentury wildfire synchrony over western North America.
Widespread synchronous wildfires driven by climatic variation, such as those that swept western North America during 1996, 2000, and 2002, can result in major environmental and societal impacts. Understanding relationships between continental-scale patterns of drought and modes of sea surface temperatures (SSTs) such as El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), and...
متن کاملDecadal Variability in the Terrestrial Carbon Budget Caused by the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation
The terrestrial carbon dioxide (CO2) budget interacts with the Earth’s climate system on diurnal to centennial and longer time scales, making it critical for climatic prediction and stabilization. Atmospheric observations and global syntheses of CO2 data indicate that the terrestrial biosphere is one the major sources of interannual variability, but the underlying mechanisms operating on differ...
متن کاملDecadal summer drought frequency in China: the increasing influence of the Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation
Decadal variations in summer drought events during 1956–2005 are examined over Eastern China to identify their leading variability modes and their linkages to the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation (AMO), and global warming. The PDO influence is found to dominate China drought frequency from the 1960s to early 1990s via modulating the Western Pacific Subtropic...
متن کاملPacific and Atlantic Ocean influences on multidecadal drought frequency in the United States.
More than half (52%) of the spatial and temporal variance in multidecadal drought frequency over the conterminous United States is attributable to the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). An additional 22% of the variance in drought frequency is related to a complex spatial pattern of positive and negative trends in drought occurrence possibly relat...
